To be a service dog, you must be legally disabled, and the dog must be trained to perform tasks that specifically ist you with your disability. Emotional support is not a task under the law. There is a second clification under the law: Emotional Support Animal. These are animals whose owners are legally disabled by a mental condition, and the animal's presence and emotional support ists them with that. However, they have no special rights except in two situations: One is that most rental housing has to allow them if requested as an accomodation for a disability. The other is that airlines must allow them in-cabin. Otherwise, they are treated like normal pets under the law.
