Was the apartheid just an unequal and unfair separation of races similar to the jim crow south?

Am I getting the gist of it? Could you better explain please? I understand that the people were separated into white, black indian, and coloureds and that they were placed into different communities and all. Am I somewhat in the neighborhood of the correct answer?
