How do you get rid of mucus?

I have this horrible mucus in my throat. I tried coughing it up but it won't move, tried gargling with salt water and normal water. If i try to cough it up too much my throat begins to hurt really bad. Please help!! I need something really easy to do...my doctor said it was normal...yucky doctor ):
